Race between Anchorage and Nome is over 1,160 miles —
a serious challenge for all the competitors.
Tom fulfilled his dream when he entered the 2007 Iditarod — becoming only the third person from Ohio
ever to compete in this prestegious event. But after a great start — bad luck, poor weather and a broken sled forced him to
withdraw from the race.
That was last year. It's now a new racing season, and after much deliberation Tom has decided to go back
to Alaska and take on the 2008 Iditarod. This will require great determination and sacrifice on the part of
both Tom and his wife Brenda. But it's a price they are willing to pay in pursuit of a dream.
Tom currently has 25 Alaskan huskies in his kennel, from which he will pick his
16-dog Iditarod team. Tom and his team have already started training, and will work together right up
until Race Day — Saturday, March 1st, 2008.
Tom says his primary goal is to finish the Iditarod with a happy and healthy team of dogs.
This race is an
intense experience for each of the mushers — providing extraordinary physical and mental challenges. It is no
surprise that each year fewer than 100 people qualify to run in the Iditarod. This is really a tough race.
